"Butterfly in a box" Created by: Mark Presley at facesofmagic.com "Butterfly in a box" TEST 9
I just love carnivals. Today I decided to take the family out for a good old fashioned carnival. You know the kind that they just throw up in a few hours with just a few extension tension poles to adjust and level the ride. No permanent foundation, just a parking lot. Well anyway, I brought the video camera gear once again just in case I get that once in a life time people reaction when I'm performing the butterfly. It looks like tonight was one of those nights. I had the perfect backdrop carnival rides, lights, people all the elements that scream out fun and MAGIC.
I decided to use the Himalaya, one of my favorite rides, as my backdrop for the "Butterfly in a box" effect. I took position near a plant that was growing on the island dividers that you see in most parking lots.
I asked the camera man to just start rolling the camera. I was waiting for the perfect opportunity to start performing the butterfly. Suddenly, a group of young teenagers stopped a few feet in front of me to chat, check out their phones, facebook or text. By the way do they really have to text when their right in front of another? Anyway back to the story. While the teenagers were doing their thing I went into magic mode. I said "Look at that" not paying attention to the teenagers I started reaching down toward the plant. Almost as if I'm oblivious that they are even there. Like, I'm in my own world. My hands came up in a cupped position from the plant. I kept peeking into my hands as if I'm curious to what I got. I then opened my hands and the butterfly started flying around under and over my hands and then caught it in a cupped position. The teenagers who were a short time ago oblivious of me are now looking at me in a David Blaine, Criss Angel type manner. One girl's mouth dropped. She then elbowed her friend nearby. Excited to explain to her what just happened. I then released the butterfly again from my cupped hands.
This time more people stopping in their tracks in disbelief of what they were seeing. Some 8ft away others one foot away. I then grabbed the butterfly in a cupped position and walked away as if what I discovered was so magical that I just had to keep it. The teenagers just looked at one another and then at me and that back at one another as if they can't quite put together what just happened. I think spontaneous magic is the best. When you are in an unsuspecting place where people don't expect to see magic. When you totally throw people off guard. You are acting like them. Like your just normal having a good time. The other thing that makes spontaneous magic strong is when your not using props or at least the props don't look like props. For example the "Butterfly in a box" It wouldn't be odd to see a butterfly outside in a carnival would it? of course not! Butterflies are always out everywhere.
So this is another story to add into my "Butterfly in a box" journey/ diary. Don't forget! October 30th at 11:30 Central Standard time. I will be talking Livestream about my "Butterfly in a box" invention, and talking about the struggles, mistakes and triumphs of this unbelievable, moving and inspiring magic effect. Like a caterpillar that was in a cocoon and transformed into a butterfly is exactly what happened to me. I was a magician who suddenly transformed, like a metamorphosis into a INVENTOR. Don't miss the unveiling of the "Butterfly in a box" mini documentary and first released video trailer (NOT TEASER VERSION) hers is the link for the livestream video. http://facesofmagic.com/Faces_Of_Magic/Butterfly_in_a_box.html Thanks again for all your support as well as people that are starting to follow my work. I plan on doing a lot more for the magic community. THE BUTTERFLY HAS LANDED! and this is the TRANSFORMATION of great things to come.
IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY will only be as STRONG as your MIND allows it to.
